5 TIPS TO SAFELY CLEAN YOUR
GUTTERS THIS SUMMER

Gutter maintenance is an important part of home ownership, but is easily forgotten about. Keeping your home’s rain gutters clean is a great way to extend the lifespan of your gutter system as well as protect your home from costly leaks and other damage. Follow these five tips to ensure that you stay safe this summer while managing this task.

1. GATHER ALL OF THE NECESSARY TOOLS

Like most jobs, cleaning out your home’s gutter system is much easier to do when you’re prepared with the right tools. Make sure you have a strong and stable ladder, sturdy work gloves, a bucket or tarp to collect leaves and debris for easier clean-up, and a water hose with a high-pressure spray attachment for thoroughly washing off any stubborn mud or other material from your gutters.

2. FIND A STURDY SPOT TO PLACE YOUR LADDER

Using a ladder improperly is a surefire way to sustain an injury. In order to access the roof and your home’s rain gutters, use a sturdy ladder placed on solid, level ground. If possible, have someone standing nearby to brace the ladder or use a ladder stabilizer to ensure you’re safe while standing at the top.

3. WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

You never know what may have gotten lodged in your gutter system, and you don’t want to risk getting injured or sick from coming into contact with animal feces, sharp bits of metal or sticks, insects such as wasps and hornets, or other dangerous materials. Protect your hands and eyes from bacteria and injury throughout the gutter cleaning process by wearing thick work gloves and protective eyewear.

4. TAKE YOUR TIME

This is the simplest recommendation on this list, but may be the most frequently ignored. Most injuries or mistakes occur when someone is in a rush to complete the job, so remind yourself to slow down and take your time while moving down your home’s rain gutters. Taking a few extra minutes to stabilize your ladder or watch where you’re putting your hands could save you a lot of hassle later on. Remember that safety is the most important thing. If you can’t get the job done all at once without rushing, it’s okay to take a break and come back again in a few hours or days.

5. SCHEDULE GUTTER CLEANINGS TWICE A YEAR

It’s much easier to clean out gutters if they’ve been properly maintained in the past. Plan on having your gutters cleaned two times a year, in the spring and the fall, to ensure they’re kept clean and functional. You can either perform these cleanings yourself or hire a professional gutter cleaning company to provide the service for you. If your gutters are cleaned by a professional technician, they’ll also be able to inspect your rain gutters for any potential issues and provide a repair before something turns into a major problem.
